Jesse Eisenberg was on The Diane Rehm Show earlier this week and was asked about his inspiration for his take on Lex Luthor. His response may be one of the scariest bits of information regarding the film to come up so far.
The best thing to channel as an actor is yourself, to figure out what makes you angry, or vengeful or righteous. Those are the feelings that Lex Luthor has and use that…
A lot of fans freaked out about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in this inevitable box office monster, but one of the biggest wild cards for us has always been the casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. Considering that the majority of the characters that Jesse Eisenberg has played have pretty much seemed like mirrors of his own personality, we have been struggling with the idea of fitting his personality into Luthor.
Heath Ledger was a controversial casting decision that proved the fans wrong, but Heath Ledger produced an otherworldly performance that didn’t have you seeing Ledger in the performance at all. He manipulated himself into something else entirely. So it worked. It sounds like Jesse Eisenberg is taking a different approach and it does make us a little nervous.
To be fair, he went on to discuss how it would have been silly for him to emulate Hackman’s iconic performance, and we agree. We just aren’t so sure about him injecting his own personality into a character of this stature. We will toast to us being proven wrong though. Check out the interview below.
